Wireless Acess & Printing

Getting online is quick and simple.  All you need is a wireless enabled laptop computer or a tablet PC that supports the WiFi standard.  No user names or passwords are required. Many wireless computers will automatically detect and connect to the nearest wireless network. If your computer presents a choice of wireless networks, select westportlib.

Windows 2000 & XP

  1. From Control Panel, select Network and Dial-up Connections or Network and Internet Connections.
  2. Right click on Wireless Network Connection or Local Area Connection and click Properties.
  3. Locate Internet TCP/IP protocol and get into Properties. 
  4. Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
  5. For XP, right click on Wireless Network Connection and select View Available Wireless Networks. Select westportlib and click Connect.

Windows Vista

  1. Click on the connection icon in the task bar. Click Connect to a Network.
  2. Select westportlib from available wireless networks. Make sure selection box shows Wireless instead of All
  3. Select Connect Anyway
  4. Select Save this Network and Start this connection automatically if you prefer to connect to the library's wireless network whenever you visit
  5. Wait until the connection icon changes to a globe in the lower right hand corner, before accessing the Internet.

Macs OS X

  1. Select Apple Menu, System Preference, and Network button.
  2. Select TCP/IP tab and configure Using DHCP.
  3. You may need to configure via AirPort or other wireless (WiFi) Ethernet.
  4. Leave Domain Name Servers and Search Domains blank.

Printing from laptops
(Sorry Mac-users. A Mac compatible version is still in the works.)

Click on the link below to start the auto-installer.  When you shut down your laptop, the application will disappear. 

  •  Accept end user’s license agreement
  • The thin client window will be minimized in the task bar
  • Select File, Print and follow the dialog instructions
  • Choose color or black & white printer (10¢ a page for b&w, 25¢ for color)
  • Type your library card barcode number and PIN (last 4 digits of your phone number).  If you do not have a library card, ask for a guest pass at reference
