Weezer Snuggie

I am loving this. I'm a Slanket owner myself, but everybody knows that the Snuggie has the better (and cheesier) ads. Weezer has been around since I was a teenager and has always been known for making unique and funny videos.

Where's Bubbles?

Amidst all the tragedy of Michael Jackson's death, I couldn't help but wonder "Whatever happened to Bubbles the Chimp?"

Non-Misogynist Prom

PromTunes.jpg
Tomorrow night, the prom at Arcadia High School in Pasadena, California won't be playing songs which refer to women as "hos" and other misogynistic names thanks to the Women's Health and Issues Club.

Since I'm always so excited to find the latest music sites on the internet, I will share my latest and most favorite discovery in a long time: Blip.FM.

Hip-Hop and the Recession

lil_jon.jpg
After reading all these articles lately about how the recession has affected all these different industries, even down to the fashion industry, it suddenly dawned on me: how will this affect hip-hop? When I think of hip-hop, I think of guys walking around in mega-bling and rapping about designer labels, which kind of seems insensitive at a time when 8% of the population is unemployed. Being the good librarian that I am, I thought to myself, "surely there must be an article about this." Sure enough, CNN covered this story last month, when they noticed that rappers showed up at the Grammys dressed more demurely:

End of Year Music

pitchfork.jpg
From my years of working in college radio, I think that my favorite part of any year-end are year-end music lists. The lists on Pitchfork have just started coming in, particularly this gem: The 100 Best Tracks of 2008. I know that back in the day, I used to be more concerned about "best albums," but the way that I buy and listen to music now is much more song-based, so I am really digging this list.

Barry Mani-NO

And you thought that CT had some wacky laws for teenagers... Here is a story about a judge who sentences teen noise offenders to listen to Barry Manilow.

Google Me

If a librarian wrote a hip-hop song, this is what it would be. She even makes a reference to Webster's Dictionary!

Connect Four

connectfour.jpg
I hope that everybody had good holidays! I was home for two weeks and got to spend a lot of time with my family and friends, mostly playing board games. Just when I was starting to feel like I'm a huge dork, I found this on Kanye West's blog: he loves playing Connect Four! Apparently Beyonce' is notorious in the hip-hop community for being an excellent Connect Four player- she beat Kanye 9 times in a row!

FineTune

The website Finetune allows you to create streaming radio stations tailored to your specific tastes. Their catalog of songs is extensive and includes every major label in the US as well as many of the bigger independent labels, making it easy to find the songs you want.

Shelfari

The website Shelfari combines social networking with books. You can create a virtual bookshelf and share it with your friends. It is a great way to see what your friends are reading, and to find new books that you might enjoy. And unlike MySpace or Facebook, you don't have to feel obligated to give personal information, such as your age, location, or other interests. You can simply list the books you like to read!

Sassy

cameronsascover.jpgWe all know the standard teen magazines: Seventeen, YM, Teen Vogue, etc. But, back in the late 80's/early 90's, there was a groundbreaking magazine called Sassy. It was the first teen magazine that worked to empower girls' self image rather than simply tell them what lip gloss to buy.

I'm So Excited (and I just can't hide it)!!!

logo.jpgI have just discovered the best website ever. SingShot is like MySpace meets American Idol.

Austin Power

austin.jpg Do you ever notice that PBS sometimes rocks? This is due to their weekly broadcasts of Austin City Limits, a show which features a variety of live performances by independent rock bands.

Abracadabra

galloway-gregory-book-060323.jpg In honor of magician David Blaine's latest stunt, which he is performing this week in Times Square, I'm (sort of) devoting this post to magic.
