Flag Day
Do you know what June 14th is famous for? On that day in 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation that affirmed that June 14th would be Flag Day. President Harry Truman signed the Congressional legislation supporting this in 1949.
Music has always played a part in patriotic celebrations throughout American history.
Here are my musical suggestions to listen to as we marvel at the flag and contemplate its importance:
Berlin, Irving. God Bless America
Cohan, George M. You're a Grand Old Flag
Gould, Morton. American Salute
Ives, Charles. Variations on "America"
Sousa, John Philip. Stars & Stripes Forever
Williams, John. Liberty Fanfare
