Sondheim's Into the Woods
Although I recently wrote about the Staples Players production of Into the Woods, I must recommend the new version appearing at the Westport Country Playhouse from May 1-26.
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's tale of the challenges faced by a baker and his wife as they attempt to overturn a magic spell cast upon them by an evil witch is more than a fantasy. The couple embark on a journey through the woods and meet fairy tale characters that we have all grown up with. Happiness is not guaranteed as moral and social issues are presented.
An interesting fact is that Danielle Ferland, who stars as the Baker's Wife, was Little Red Riding Hood in the original Broadway show.
