Iceland and Sweden are hot, hot, hot!

No, not global warming! Outstanding mysteries set in Reykjavik, the cosmopolitan capital of Iceland, and Ystad, a small town in the wind-lashed Swedish province of Skane.

Arnaldur Indridason’s second Inspector Erlandur Sveinsson mystery Silence of the Grave is expected in October. Erlandur was first introduced to us in Jar City (2005).

Icelanders use what we would consider as a first name as their last name, so Arnaldur Indridason’s books are filed under “A” for Arnaldur. In Reykjavik, you would find him listed in the phone book as Arnaldur, Indridason. In his novels, his character is addressed as “Erlandur” by colleagues and criminals alike, rather than “Sveinsson.”

Henning Mankell’s brand new Inspector Kurt Wallander mystery The Man Who Smiled is the eighth in the series. Mankell also wrote a "spin-off" Before the Frost (2005) which features Wallander's daughter Linda, newly graduated from the police academy and an Ystad station rookie.

Wallander is so esteemed by his fans that there is an entire website devoted to him. If you are a fan too, check it out for news of a possible British television series.

Some fans of the international mystery genre may remember Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, a husband and wife team who collaborated on ten mysteries featuring another famous Swedish detective -- Martin Beck, of the Stockholm homicide squad. One of the Beck titles, The Laughing Policeman, was an Edgar Award winner in 1971.

Both Arnaldur and Mankell are recipients of the coveted CWA Gold Dagger Award.
