Faithful supporters of the Authors at the Library series who attended my talk yesterday or picked up my list of the best books (so far) this year may be justified in their reaction to the NBA nominess in fiction, none of which were on my list.
My reaction was: HUH?
Emails flew thick and fast between members of the National Book Critics fiction committee, and even more were exchanged between the entire board.
The consensus about the NBA fiction nominees is that the judges looked for young writers, several of whom are pushing the boundaries of the traditional forms of fiction.(At least one book is full of gimmicks, or should I say, devices.) Two of them are in the increasing number of post-9/11 novels. None of them were previously considered by the fiction committee, though of course, now we'll have a look.
For the record, the NBCC nonfiction committee finds the nominees in that category quite appropriate.
