"Ordinary and Familiar"

That's the domain of Anne Tyler's many novels. Tyler lives in Baltimore and so do her characters. They live all over town and come from different ordinary and familiar lives. Tyler speaks of a "mist of irony" that hangs over whatever she sees; her gentle satire lingers as each story ends and the characters remain in your mind. Her latest, Digging to America has two sets of parents meeting at the Baltimore airport as they await the arrival of two Korean girls to join their families. As the families grow a friendship, Tyler shows the joys and challenges of middle American life. One of the families is Iranian-American, as is Tyler's own. Seventeen novels so far. My favorites are Saint Maybe & Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant. I love the Baltimore ambiance, because I lived there for a few years. Interesting interview.
