Summer school

The Usual Suspects will continue to meet through the summer and our July and August selections are mysteries with an academic setting.

On July 15th we will discuss Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers.

Mystery writer Harriet Vane returns to her college at Oxford for her “gaudy,” or class reunion.

When members of her graduating class start receiving poison pen letters, Harriet investigates, and Sir Peter Wimsey eventually comes to her assistance.

Although no murder occurs in Gaudy Night, which is somewhat unusual in crime fiction, it is not without suspense and psychological thrills.

On August 19th we will discuss The Chatham School Affair by Thomas Cook.

Attorney Henry Griswald narrates the story of the summer of 1926, when he was the student of the lovely and unusual Elizabeth Channing, recently arrived in his coastal Massachusetts village to teach art at a private school run by his father.

Decades later, the townspeople are still racked by guilt and troubled by uncertainty -- who, or what, drove Miss Channing to madness and murder?

The layers are peeled away in an agonizingly slow fashion in this disturbing yet entertaining psychological thriller.

We meet at 2 p.m. in the Seminar Room upstairs. It is nice and cool at the Library, and you can get a nice iced tea or coffee at our cafe to bring with you.

Hope to see you there. Even if you don’t have time to read (or re-read) the books please feel free to take advantage of an opportunity to meet with some fellow mystery fans.

To reserve a copy of either book, call 291-4821.
