The bookman cometh

dunning.jpgNext Sunday, June 15, at 2 pm The Usual Suspects Mystery Reading Group will be discussing The Bookman’s Wake by John Dunning. Denver cop-turned-book dealer Cliff Janeway is lured into going to Seattle to bring back a fugitive wanted for assault, burglary, and the possible theft of a priceless edition of Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. The bail jumper turns out to be a young woman calling herself Eleanor Rigby. To find her Janeway must unravel the secrets of the book's past and its mysterious maker.

This book is the second of five Cliff Janeway mysteries that Dunning – who has been called “a master yarn spinner” – has written.

Each book leaves you informed on a unique aspect of book publishing and collecting, but one Booklist review warns: “… don't pigeonhole these surprisingly muscular novels into that wimpy PBS drawing room where murder is merely an excuse for intellectuals to talk fancy.”

This is the first in the summer series of discussions called Paper Chases. We will discuss A Letter of Mary by Laurie R. King on July 13 and The Burglar Who Traded Ted Williams by Lawrence Block on August 17.

Newcomers are always welcome. To reserve copies of the books call 291-4821.

block.jpgDon’t forget that Lawrence Block will be at the Library on Tuesday, July 15 at 7:30 pm to speak about the soon to be released fourth book in his John Keller series, Hit and Run.

Keller, a lonely, wistful hit-man, originally appeared as a semi-regular feature in Playboy magazine in the 1990s.

This is a rare opportunity to hear one of the great mystery writers of our time. Don’t miss it!
