by Lauren St. John   Grades 4-7 (J St. John)

Martine’s parents are killed in a fire, and she must leave her home in England to live on a wildlife reserve in Africa with a grandmother she has never met.  As soon as she arrives she hears whisperings of a mythical animal living there….a white giraffe.  No one has ever really seen the animal, but one stormy night, Martine looks out her bedroom window
straight into the eyes of the tall, silvery animal.  The giraffe is real, so why is everyone trying to keep it a secret?

The Traitor King

by Todd Mitchell  Grades 5 – 7 (J Mitchell)

Darren and Jackie Mananann travel to Maine with their family to visit their eccentric uncle. However, Uncle Will has disappeared leaving a mysterious note, and while all the adults see nothing unusual in this, the siblings decide to search for him. They soon discover an astonishing secret: that everyone in their family possesses magical powers and their family has a unique tie to an unseen world. Mitchell effectively blends contemporary New England and the world of Irish myths as humor, menace, and mystery suffuse this fast-paced tale, which is peopled with brownies, nixies, bogels, as well as a handful of eccentric humans. New surprises and plot twists are sure to keep readers enthralled, because nothing–librarians, skeletal pursuers, or dads–is exactly what it seems.

by Joanne Harris Grades 4 & up (J Harris)

Maddy Smith, who bears the mysterious mark of a rune on her hand, learns that she is destined to join the gods of Norse mythology and play a role in the fate of the world.

by Suzanne Crowley Grade 4/5 & up (J Crowley)

In the small town of Jumbo, TX, thirteen-year-old Merilee thrives on routine. She lives a “Very Ordered Existence” (VOE for short). Her strict schedule includes School (Horrendous!), Litter patrol (30 minutes daily), Lunch (PB&J and a pickle), Bottle return (Friday only, at the Piggly Wiggly)…And so it goes until the arrival of Biswick O’Connor (and his father) and Miss Veraleen Holliday. Merilee has time for neither. Both of these strangers, “like the hot desert wind that brings only bad news, blow into town and change everything”.

Both humorous and touching, each character will touch you in some way. Merilee, doing Dame Fiona’s meditation and breathing exercises that help her cope with disruptions and keep her Asperger’s under control; Biswick, an obsessive, outrageously positive boy, son of “THE poet” and alcholholic; Miss Veraleen, excellent cook, former cowgirl with secrets of her own. You’ll also meet Merilee’s mother, father, uncle and grandmother.

When her Uncle Frank is executed for treason against England’s King George in 1746 and his severed head is mounted on a pike for public viewing, daring Alice tries to reclaim the head for a proper burial, finding an unlikely ally in the soft-hearted executioner, while incurring the wrath of the royal guard. The story was inspired by an ancestor of the author, who was executed in the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion.

by Valorie Fisher  All Ages (JJ Fisher)

Engaging photographs portray an attentive big brother as seen through the eyes of a baby.
This is one of my favorite books to read at Itty Bittys!

by David McPhail PreK to Grade 3  (JJ  McPhail)

A young boy’s initial fears and then gradual fascination with water is detailed in both real and magical experiences. Fantasy combined with environmental awareness give the book a sense of purpose. McPhail’s imaginative illustrations are luminous and convey a tone of beauty and respect for this essential resource.
