Serling’s strong social conscience was pervasive in his work as a writer, producer, and teacher. He made history by winning six Emmy Awards for Dramatic Writing.

red leather.jpgOn Wednesday, April 9, Lily Koppel, author of The Red Leather Diary: Reclaiming a Life Through the Pages of a Lost Journal, and the keeper of the diary itself, Florence Howitt, discussed the book which recreated the life of Manhattan in the 1930s by combining Howitt's diary entries and memories from Howitt.

Lily Koppel, author of The Red Leather Diary: Reclaiming a Life Through the Pages of a Lost Journal, incorporates her lyrical writing style with the original diary thoughts of a young woman, Florence Howitt. The result is a Depression-era Manhattan fairytale. The diary was found in a dumpster, and the book's author traced the owner to Westport, where she now lives. Both Lily Koppel and Florence Howitt, the subject of the book, will discuss the book and answer questions.

Using handwriting samples, DNA testing, and an undiscovered cache of Bourbon family letters, she draws a vivid portrait of an astonishing woman. This event was co-sponsored by the Y’s Women.
