Dear Mr Colvin
I was very pleased to watch your recent interview With Charlie Rose. Your concept of the myth of innate talent is music to my ears.I was a graduate student at
arizona State in Psychology planning to become a clinical Psychologist until my clinical professor informed me that a clinical degree was not appropriat for me because I did not have a tolerance for ambiguity.I agreed with him and ended up teaching future teachers how to improve the behaviors of handicapped children without resorting to the scientific fictions of traditional clinical techniques. In using this behavioral approach we were able to define and measure the changes of the children, and change our procedures if they were not working.I realize that I have used much time to explain my history, but in the 60's my colleagues and I we subjected to much criticism for using such mechanistic procedures without regard for the underlying (non observable) causes of the child's deficits I am very pleased to read your ideas of behaviors that many people still attribute to underlying causes that are neither observable or measurable. Thank you very much for bringing light to this area.
