New England Winds

Bringing an attitude that is all their own, the Air Force's New England Winds create an intimate musical setting that will capture the imagination of any audience. This group of five is well versed in traditional quintet repertoire and performs musical selections ranging from the 18th century to the contemporary period. The group consists of Staff Sergeant Avril Claytor on flute, Staff Sergeant Kate Nettles on oboe, Senior Airman Ian Tyson on clarinet, Staff Sergeant Andrew Fordham on horn, and Staff Sergeant Christopher Stahl on bassoon.

On a memorable day in human history, February 12, 1809, two babies were born an ocean apart: Abraham Lincoln in a one-room Kentucky log cabin; Charles Darwin on an English country estate. Searching for the men behind the icons of emancipation and evolution, New Yorker writer Adam Gopnik will discuss his book Angels and Ages: A Short Book About Darwin, Lincoln, and Modern Life. Hear about their captivating lives, Lincoln and Darwin as they really were: family men and social climbers; ambitious manipulators and courageous adventurers; the living husband, father, son, and student behind each myth.

Riverwalk Display: BYOBags: Westport Opts for Reusable Bags

“BYOBags: Westport Opts for Reusable Bags” features all of the entries to Westport’s Reusable Bag Contest.

A companion exhibit by Belleville, N.J., artist Karen Guancione of banner art made from plastic shopping bags from around the globe will hang from the mezzanine railings in The Great Hall from March 4 through April 30.

On Tuesday, March 17, from 6:30-8:00 pm, the Town of Westport will have a reception in the McManus Room to honor the winners and all participants.

Film @ the Library: Refusenik

The Library and the Westport Arts Center present Refusenik, the first retrospective documentary to chronicle the thirty-year movement to free Soviet Jews, showing how a small grass roots effort bold enough to take on a Cold War superpower blossomed into an international human rights campaign that engaged the disempowered and world leaders alike. Told through the eyes of activists on both sides of the Iron Curtain —many of whom survived punishment in Soviet Gulag labor camps — the film is a tapestry of first-person accounts of heroism, sacrifice, and ultimately, liberation. (117 min) Discussion to follow led by Kyle Seaburg, a film teacher at Norwalk High School, and several of his students.

Called by one reviewer the Erin Brockovich of the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Riki Ott, Ph.D. meticulously recounts the events and aftermath of the catastrophic 1989 oil spill in Alaska’s Prince William Sound in her new book, Not One Drop: Betrayal and Courage in the Wake of the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. Actor James Naughton will introduce Ott who will also show clips from her documentary on the spill. A former commercial salmon fisherman with a PhD in marine toxicology and a specialist in oil pollution, Ott experienced the disaster firsthand as a resident of Cordova, Alaska.
