7:30 pm
McManus Room

Join TEAM Westport for this open forum, the sixth in the series on Multiculturism and Race. Sociologist David L. Levinson, Ph.D., President of Norwalk Community College, will frame the issue before discussion begins. “Westporters who have attended a TEAM Westport Conversation understand our “Open Space” format encourages participation,” said Harold Bailey Jr., TEAM Westport chair. “It is not a panel of experts or a lecture,” he added. “Rather, this will be a chance for parents, teachers, students, and alumni from all of Westport’s schools—in fact, anyone who is interested in having our town’s children get into the colleges they want and succeed in the world—to raise issues important to them, share their thoughts, and even choose to take action, all in an open, honest atmosphere." TEAM Westport is the town's official committee on multiculturalism and diversity.

AUTHORS @THE LIBRARY: David Pogue

twitter.jpgSaturday, November 14, 2009
11:00 am
McManus Room

New York Times personal-technology columnist David Pogue admits to having been a real skeptic at first about the social networking service Twitter. But he quickly became a Twitterphile after seeing a colleague get obscure, needed information almost instantly by questioning his followers on Twitter. Pretty soon Pogue was a complete convert, and, not surprisingly given the lengthy roster of books he has already penned, a new title, The World According to Twitter, was in the works. Pogue will talk about Twitter itself and his new book, which, in fact, isn’t really about Twitter at all. Rather it’s a fascinating collection of some 2,500 clever and often hilarious tweets in reply to questions he posed to his “followers,” ranging from the earnest (When do you know the honeymoon’s over?) to the curious (Tell us the story of your tatoo) to the creative (Make up a phony Chinese proverb).

In addition to Pogue’s weekly print column in The New York Times, he contributes an NYT online column and video and a popular daily blog, “Pogue’s Posts.” He is also an Emmy award-winning tech correspondent for CBS News and a best-selling author, with more than 3 million books in print. He wrote or co-wrote seven books in the Dummies series, and, in 1999, launched his own series of computer books called the Missing Manual series, which now totals more than 100 titles. He lives in Westport.

Books will be available for purchase and signing.

SPECIAL EVENT: Clips from film Defiance based on book by Nechama Tec

defiance-book.jpgSunday,November 15
2:00 pm
McManus Room

Westport author Nechama Tec will show clips from the 2008 film Defiance based on her book Defiance: The Bielski Partisans, a riveting history of one group who struggled against the Nazis. Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber starred in the film, and Nechama Tec's son Roland Tec co-produced the film. The largest armed rescue operation of Jews by Jews in World War II, this extraordinary community included both men and women, some with weapons, but mostly unarmed, ranging from infants to the elderly. She reconstructs for the first time the amazing details of how these partisans and their families--hungry, exposed to the harsh winter weather--managed not only to survive, but also to offer protection to all Jewish fugitives who could find their way to them.

Pageturners: The Madonnas of Leningrad

Madonnas.jpgTuesday, November 17
10:30 am and 7:30 pm
Seminar Room

Discussion of the book The Madonnas of Leningrad by Debra Dean. 240 pages. A strong storyline, with a heavy dollop of fact, in this case the history and contents of the Hermitage Museum in Leningrad/St. Petersburg. The characters themselves are obviously important to the tale, but the essence of the story is the nature of memory itself. Bit by bit, the ravages of age are eroding Marina's grip on the everyday. And while the elderly Russian woman cannot hold on to fresh memories — the details of her grown children's lives, the approaching wedding of her grandchild — her distant past is preserved: vivid images that rise unbidden of her youth in war-torn Leningrad.
