Navigating the School Cafeteria: Making Healthy Choices and Packing Healthy Lunches

Enjoy a short program on making healthy choices and packing healthy lunches for school with Jennifer Dahlgren and Ilisa Nussbaum.

Jennifer Dahlgren is a graduate student at the University of New Haven, studying nutrition and dietetics in preparation for a career as a registered dietitian. As a member of the Connecticut Dietetic Association Legislative Committee, she is involved in promoting public policy initiatives to lower heath care costs through preventative nutritonal care provided by a registered dietitian. Ilisa Nussbaum's cooking education includes Pastry Arts at the former Peter Kumpf’s Culinary Institute in Manhattan (now the Institute for Culinary Education) and a variety of courses at The Culinary Institute of America. She teaches a variety of cooking classes, caters events, and has written a monthly cooking column for the now defunct Shattered Magazine. Ilisa is working towards a degree as a Registered Dietician at the University of New Haven.

Margie Gillis, Ed.D., former Language Therapist and Director of Mastering Reading Instruction at Haskins Laboratories, founded Literacy How, Inc., which promotes the science of teaching reading through comprehensive professional development, coaching, and classroom support. She will speak on the basic strategies used to develop literacy. Gillis is also cofounder and vice-president of Smart Kids with Learning Disabilities and president of the Connecticut Branch of the International Dyslexia Association.

The City Winds Trio will introduce children to music and instruments of the orchestra. Crispian Fordham on flute, Meredyth Coleman on oboe, and Yuki Higashi on bassoon will play Peter and the Wolf and other children’s classical favorites to teach about rhythm and melody. Children will also have the opportunity to try an instrument and do movement games.

Odyssey of the Mind

Suzanne Sherman Propp, Westport native and music teacher at Green’s Farms School will perform songs from her newly released CD, Play, a family CD of original songs and traditional songs as well as versions of favorites from artists including James Taylor. Play was produced by fellow Westport Native Josh Margolis and Suzanne’s husband Peter Propp. All families and children are encouraged to come listen and "PLAY" at the library.
