In a referendum, Darien voters rejected an appropriation of $26.7 million toward the condemnation and purchase of 32 acres to stop a development of 189 luxury rental apartments, 25 percent of which would be for affordable housing.

After receiving approval in 1998 to build 189 apartments which would include 25 percent affordable, Avalon Bay Communities, a national real estate developer, learns that the town of Darien wants to keep the property for recreational use and child care and senior centers.
