This Saturday marks the 80th anniversary of the first ceremony for the Academy Awards. On May 16, 1929, over 250 people attended a dinner at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood where the awards were given in twelve categories by a committee of twenty voting members. The entire membership of the Academy began voting three years later; this event made its television debut in 1953, and to use that infamous cliche, "the rest is history."
