Rocking on the 'Net

pandora.bmp
Have you ever wished you could have your own radio station? Pandora Internet Radio is a free way to create an online radio station with all the music you want. You just enter bands or songs you already like into the system and Pandora will create an ongoing playlist of songs for you based on your musical interest. The site is a product of the Music Genome Project:

"Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony."

If you like a song, you give it a thumbs-up and if you don't, you give it a thumbs-down. This helps the software determine what elements of music you like. For example, I told Pandora that I like Daft Punk, but just because they are electronic, it doesn't necessarily mean I like Vengaboys (I totally gave a thumbs-down to "We Like to Party").

One of my favorite parts about Pandora is that you can share your station with friends. My station can be found here. Feel free to make one and share it with me as well!

And while we're on the subject of music, here are some of my other favorite music sites on the web:

- Brooklyn Vegan (MP3/Music blog)
- Gorilla Vs. Bear (MP3 blog)
- KEXP (great indie station out of Seattle)
- Music For Robots (MP3 blog)
- Pitchfork! (music review site)
- Radio K (the radio station of my alma mater... My brother and I have both been DJs there!)

Snakes!

soapdvd.jpg Snakes on a Plane is finally out on DVD and we have two copies at the library! What is "Snakes on a Plane" about, you ask? Um... It is about snakes being on a plane. Okay, there's a little more to it than that. A guy witnesses a murder and is set to testify against the deadly assassin who committed it, so he has a police escort (Samuel Jackson) accompany him on the plane ride to the trial. But, the deadly assassin has other plans for this witness: a plane full of snakes!

This film (yes, I will refer to it as a "film") got a lot of internet hype prior to its release last summer, due to descriptive nature of its title. Can you imagine if other films took this title format? Some ideas:

Titanic = A Big Boat Sinks
The Shining = Guy Goes Crazy While Watching an Empty Hotel in the Middle of Winter
Back to the Future = Guy in a Vest Travels Through Time
Groundhog Day = A Guy Lives the Same Day Over and Over Again
Charlotte's Web = A Pig and Spider Become Friends: Crazy!

The Library of the Future

JetsonsThemeBldg.jpgThanks to everybody who came last night to meet with our architect. Everybody had some great input on what students need from a library:

- More meeting space, especially with multimedia capabilities.
- Comfortable seating to create a more welcoming environment.
- A more expansive cafe with more tea and food choices.
- More computers, especially laptops that can be checked-out.
- Stations to preview new music.
- Board games that can be checked-out in the library.

While a lot of these things will have to wait for actual construction to take place, I will try to accommodate by purchasing some board games. If you have any suggestions, feel free to e-mail me or stop by and let me know. I'm very partial to Tabloid Teasers, but it apparently hasn't been manufactured since 1991. I might have to do some searching on Ebay... Also, be sure to check out Teen Game Day on Saturday, March 3rd.

For updates on the library's building project, be sure to check out our new Building Blog.

* UPDATE: You guys got a shout-out on the Building Blog!

Best Week Ever

My favorite things about this week (in no particular order):

1. The book Donorboy by Brendan Halpin. The novel won an Alex Award in 2005 and follows the story of a 14-yr-old girl who loses both of her mothers in a car accident. Her sperm-donor dad takes her into his house and he struggles with the new role of fatherhood as she struggles not only with the death of her moms, but with actually having a father in her life. The most interesting thing about the book is that it is told through e-mails, IM transcripts, journal entries, and transcripts from a tape recorder. It makes you feel like you are unearthing the story, rather than having it told to you. Amazing!

2. Yesterday, I attended a workshop with other teen librarians and met somebody from the Stamford Library. I asked her if residents of Stamford felt it a little harder when the Stamford branch closed on The Office. Unfortunately, she had never seen The Office.

3. TC_bio_ilan.gifIlan won Top Chef last night!

4. This video is the best:

The penguin has a backpack that looks like a penguin! CRAZY!

Have a great weekend everybody!
