Rocking on the 'Net

Have you ever wished you could have your own radio station? Pandora Internet Radio is a free way to create an online radio station with all the music you want. You just enter bands or songs you already like into the system and Pandora will create an ongoing playlist of songs for you based on your musical interest. The site is a product of the Music Genome Project:

"Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony."

If you like a song, you give it a thumbs-up and if you don't, you give it a thumbs-down. This helps the software determine what elements of music you like. For example, I told Pandora that I like Daft Punk, but just because they are electronic, it doesn't necessarily mean I like Vengaboys (I totally gave a thumbs-down to "We Like to Party").

One of my favorite parts about Pandora is that you can share your station with friends. My station can be found here. Feel free to make one and share it with me as well!

And while we're on the subject of music, here are some of my other favorite music sites on the web:

- Brooklyn Vegan (MP3/Music blog)
- Gorilla Vs. Bear (MP3 blog)
- KEXP (great indie station out of Seattle)
- Music For Robots (MP3 blog)
- Pitchfork! (music review site)
- Radio K (the radio station of my alma mater... My brother and I have both been DJs there!)
