The new book
Derby Girl by Shauna Cross is my favorite teen title to come out in a long time. The book is near and dear to my heart for several reasons, one of which being that I'm currently a rookie with the
Connecticut Rollergirls! Training is a lot of work, and I think that this book does a good job of explaining the game and the pain that the players go through.
The book serves as the basis for Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It! The movie will star Juno's Ellen Page as Bliss Cavender, a misfit teen desperate to escape her small Texas town and her beauty pageant-obsessed mother. The movie is scheduled to start filming this summer, so now is a good time to get a jumpstart on roller derby fever!
