Let's Be Friends

dogdeer.jpg I don't mean to cop out and do two animal entries in a row, but I can't resist. Let's Be Friends features pictures of unusual animals being friends. What can be better?

I am out of town next week to attend the American Library Association Convention and will try to blog from there.

Pets in Uniform

astro_dog2.jpg example_cat_3.jpg Oh my. I do believe this is the weirdest website I've seen in awhile. PETS IN UNIFORM! Wow. For the low, low price of $19.99 you can have a photo of your pet wearing a uniform. Or, you can have me do it for free. Granted, my Photoshop skills could use some work, but you can't beat my price. Here is a picture of my dog as Martha Washington.

Summer Gaming

wii.jpg This summer, you can help beat the heat by attending gaming events at the Library. Stop by on the last day of school this Friday from 3-5 to play Wii games with your friends. If you're looking for more of a challenge, you can attend the Westport Library's first ever Gaming Tournament on Friday, August 8th! We will be having two practice sessions before the tournament on July 11th and July 25th. The tournament will include Mario Kart, Super Smash Brothers, Dance Dance Revolution, and Guitar Hero. However, I still have some surprises...

Altered Books

alteredbook.jpg To celebrate the Library's 100th birthday, we are embarking on a community-wide project called Books Unbound, in which people will make altered books that will be auctioned off to raise money for the library. What is an altered book, you ask? According to the International Society of Altered Book Artists website, an altered book is: "any book, old or new that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art. They can be ... rebound, painted, cut, burned, folded, added to, collaged in, gold-leafed, rubber stamped, drilled or otherwise adorned ... and yes! It is legal!"

Every year, the library withdraws dozens of books that are worn out, damaged, or that contain out-of-date information. Rather than having these books end up in a landfill, why not make them into art? I have withdrawn several books from the Teen section, and I can assure you that the covers are very 80's. Watch this blog, because sometime this summer I plan to host an impromptu altered book afternoon.
