Audiobooks for IPod!

ipodbook.jpgGreat news! Those of us who use IPods can now take advantage of the Library's NetLibrary service! NetLibrary has added 700 titles that are IPod compatible, just in time for summer reading! The audiobook files last for three weeks- similar to the circulation on a library book- except that you can download them from the convenience of your home computer. All you need to register for a NetLibrary account is your library card number. You can get started by visiting here. If you have questions or problems, you can always contact the reference desk at 291-4840 or ref@westportlibrary.org.

Non-Misogynist Prom

PromTunes.jpgTomorrow night, the prom at Arcadia High School in Pasadena, California won't be playing songs which refer to women as "hos" and other misogynistic names thanks to the Women's Health and Issues Club. The girls didn't want to hear songs with lyrics which were offensive to women at their prom, so they circulated a petition at school. This story has been making some waves around the internet. This piece from Pasadena's local paper has over 100 comments, most from high school students who are outraged that this decision violates their freedom of speech and that these songs are fun to dance to regardless of their content. What do you think?

I will offer this up to you: an entire radio station full of totally danceable, non-misogynist music.

A Curse Dark As Gold

A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth Bunce.jpgAre you familiar with the fairy tale Rumpelstiltskin? Elizabeth Bunce has written a fantastic book in which she reimagines the fairy tale, setting it in a woolen mill during the industrial revolution. Charlotte Miller inherits the mill after her father dies, but inherits the mill's supposed curse as well. Unable to pay off debts, she meets a strange man named Jack Spinner who will spin straw into gold... for a price. I just finished reading this and I highly recommend it, especially since Rumpelstiltskin was my favorite fairy tale growing up.

The White House on Facebook

whitehouse.jpgProving further that President Obama is truly in touch with the younger generation, the White House has launched a Facebook page. If you become a fan of the White House, you get all the official updates directly from the source, including information about swine flu. It's always nice to get a little "real" news in between all the updates from your friends about what music they're listening to or what they've been eating for lunch.
